So, apparently, we just went through an earthquake. 5.2. That's pretty decent. And I thought it was the wind. But as soon as the house started shaking, deep, deep down I knew it was an earthquake. Pretty soon, all these thoughts came rushing through my head: should I hide under the table, or in the door frame? What if a boulder comes pelting in through the window, or the house crumbles on itself?? See, if my cat were here, he would probably have spun around, biting his tail, and run up to my closet to hide, 10 minutes before the shaking even started.

Hmm, you may be wondering: what is this impossible task of which you speak? well, it could be collecting as many pebbles as possible, or, in my case, it's taking as many pictures of the sky as possible. I've done my best, but, clearly, it's impossible. An Impossible Task is something that you begin and try finishing no matter what, even if it means death. Anyway, I haven't gone quite that far, but I think I've taken some pretty good pictures. Some of you will find this entire thing boring, others not.

Right, when I think of Sweden, the first thing that pops into my head is IKEA (yeah, I know, you were totally thinking that as well). And just outside of Sacramento is...

Over in France, there is an IKEA near our town, Compiegne (and it's about the same distance away as Sacramento). And everything it pretty much laid out the same in both places, with the same products, same prices, same food, etc. It's like a blast-from-the-other-side-of-the-world blast. After a while I kind of got confused: which country am I in?

After Davis, we also made our premiere appearance in Sacramento, which, strangely enough, neither one of us had been to. Ever. Even though it's a 4-5 hour trip from our house.

Since it was freezing when we left, we were all long-sleeves-jeans when we got to the city. After walking around for about an hour, it was clear that our sense of temperature was slightly off: in Mt Shasta, March feels more like November. We're kind of in a world of our own. And the rest of the state is normal (I've seen this sticker about Mt Shasta that says "We're all here because we're not all there," which sums us up perfectly). So, bottom line: my arms are tanned, and Mt Shasta is still freezing.

Our PC is having breathing problems, let's say. Every time the Microsoft music comes on, you can here a delay. And I find myself always petting it, as if that will help it start up (yeah, I know, weird). This means that my patience tolerance has gone way up, because it can take up to 20 minutes to get onto my account, and then another 20 or so to get stuff installed, to check for viruses, to turn Internet on, etc...

What a wonderful day today, sunny, 60 degrees, wind - the kind that blows hairs in every directions without whipping your face either; the kind that makes you feel like you're at the beach and a storm is coming. Really, it was the strangest thing: I turned a corner, and the breeze hit me, and it felt like I was by the ocean, in Sweden or in Brittany. I could even smell salt in the air.

As I was walking, I saw two geese, two mates with no flock. But an hour later, their flock landed in the field at the back of the house, so they'll be fine.

Geography rant

In Spanish, I sit at a table where the location of Tanzania is unknown: the two girls at my table were wondering about the location of this country, and they thought it might be in Africa, without being 100% sure. Now, were I in their shoes (which, thank God, I'm not), I would be deeply embarassed for myself; it's a horrible feeling not to know enough about countries other than the United States of America, when other countries around the world know more about this type of stuff. But those two girl didn't really care about the location of Tanzania anyway; they are the type of girls who care more about prom or where to go out for lunch.
What is wrong with this high school? Geography isn't even taught anymore, and that's a bit disappointing. It means that no one is curious about the world.

Anyway, last summer, I found this site which quizes you on all the countries of the world: it's a map, and you have to click on the country that is named ("Hellenic Republic" appears, and you click on Greece, and so on). I found the site again, after thinking about the Tanzania problem. Now both of my parents and myself are competing among ourselves to see who can get the highest score out of 100.

A wave of tiredness

As soon as I got home, this wave of exhaustion just overcame me, so, even though I was tired, I made granola, watched Lost (I'm even more confused now; who will get off the island for sure, who will die, what is the whole purpose of the island in general, etc...it's a voyage of discovery) and turned my brain off. I just wasted my entire afternoon vegging about.

Granola (adapted from Je Veux du Chocolat! ):

- 2 handfulls of white chocolate chips

- 3 handfulls of semi-sweet chocolate chips

- 2 handfulls of oats

- 1 handfull of sliced almonds (which you can get by the bag at Winco)

- 1 handfull of walnuts

- honey

Mix everything in a bowl, throw into a pan, throw pan into 356F oven, for 6 to 8 minutes, checking halfway (and shaking the pan a bit, to seperate bigger pieces, but it's not really necessary). Let cool completely or eat while still warm. The stuff in the picture filled up a regular bowl and made me very full, but so worth it after a long day.

This tennis thing

So far, tennis has not been going well. On Monday, the coach started us off hard, with sprinting and running laps. After about half an hour of that, my stomach somehow could not take this crash-workout, so I had to run out of the gym to throw up. Yuck...
Then, yesterday, we all get to the gym, and the coach tells us that whoever does not have a physical must have one, otherwise they can't play. This includes me :( , meaning I can't play until tomorrow afternoon.

Tennis

It's the first day of tennis practice, which isn't even actual tennis: we're lucky enough (scoff) to get to work out first, which I haven't done since last May. So, I've been carrying this book with me around the house for the past week, kind of like Linus and his blanket. Every time I look through it, I think, "Oh, I simply must make this!" Plus, it didn't help that all the measurements are metric, but I recently bought a scale, because this book is not meant to sit on a shelf just because it's different.

I'm picky when it comes to salad: I don't like it with dressing (shocking, I know...I do eat it with ketchup, however). I had just grabbed a handful of the stuff when I noticed the prettiest salad leaf I've ever seen. It was, for no better words, pink, freckled and in the shape of, er, a butterfly. I took a picture of it before eating it (it's the one on the far left, by the way).

This is me, all bundled up, before going out to face the horrendous blizzard on Saturday. My mom and I both took umberellas to protect ourselves from the biting rain/snow/sleet/hail, but that never really worked for me, since mine kept overturning.

How Brave New World and the Chris Moyles Show are connected

I've just finished Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley. It is the scariest book I've ever read, not because it is an actual horror story, but because it is a deeply frightening view of the future. For those who have not yet read it, the story is set around London in the year AF 632 (AD 2540) and how humans are now "decanted" and "conditioned" and brought up without asking why different castes exist. After the arrival of an "uncivilized" man, philosophical debates ensue about God and Shakespeare. The ending is not the best.

Actually, this is one review at the back of the above edition:

"It's time for everyone to read or reread Brave New World."

So, how does the Chris Moyles show fit in to Brave New World?

Well, in the book, small children are conditioned through hypnopaedia: a message is repeated every night 200 times over or so for a certain amount of time while the children are falling asleep or already snoozing, so that the message is locked into their brains. It just so happens that, when bedtime comes around, I put my iPod ear buds in my ears, and listen to the Chris Moyles podcast while falling asleep. I've been doing this for the past month, and, lately, I find myself both addicted to the podcast (I start to fidget and can't fall asleep) and, during the day, when I am daydreaming, little bits of dialog pop into my mind. When I listen back to any podcast at night, I think to myself "Wow, I was just thinking about that today." I can even finish a sentence of the podcast before anyone says anything, since I know what's coming.

This is all very surreal...

Last Friday, my friends and I made this yummy chocolate-oreo layer cake, and we all thought it would be hard to make, but it turns out that the cake itself is from a mix (where's the fun in that??) and the filling is just Kool-Whip (what's up with that, anyway? I don't even dare read what's in that stuff), creme cheese and oreos. But it's so filling, a skinny slice is enough.

Look at him...he's our baby, let me tell you. We've had him since he was tiny, and he's traveled with us very obligingly: he was born in the French Alps, circa 1997, then moved with us up to the North of France (where he had the most worrying tendency: during the summer, he would disappear, sometimes for 2 weeks, once for 2 months straight), then took the long plane trip to Mt Shasta, and made it through all that.

The most puzzling thing about him living in Mt Shasta, which has a high elevation, is that he hasn't had a single flea, tick, or worm (except for ear mites, but he's always had those). He probably rolls around in the dry dirt around our house during the summer, which might keep the little beasties off of him.

When he walks in the snow, the contrast of the white of the snow against the dark brown-yellow of his fur coat make him look like a "Siberian tiger", as my dad likes to call him. His fur kind of poofs up when he comes into contact with the cold, and he always tries to shake the snow off his paws after each step, which is no use, really.

I took these pictures during the summer of 2007, while walking through the Compiegne forest. I was listening to my iPod at the same time, which was playing the soundtrack of the movie Marie-Antoinette: Avril 14th, Jynweythek Ylow, Ceremony, Opus 17 and Opus 23 (and many more), but I thought the soundtrack fit perfectly with the scenery and the weather and the location: while on her way to Versailles, and before becoming Dauphine, Marie-Antoinette spent a few days in the castle that you can see above at the very back of the park (which is surrounded by a gate, which I'm pretty I opened myself in order to take the middle picture). There were virtually no people arround, so I spent a couple of hours alone in the park with my camera and the sun and the forest.

Aah, I love drinking tea on a Sunday afternoon when it's cold outside.

What I have here is a Tea Tiger, which is just a thermos, and it is filled with Pear-Cinnamon tea from this shop called Sereni-Tea, in Mt Shasta. Pear-Cinnamon is my favorite tea because it's sour and fruity and quite yummy.

I'm just thinking about what happened on Friday night: I was at my friend Elaina's house, and she had just put fresh, boiling tea in her Tea Tiger, and shook it, much like you would shake a snow globe; by doing that, steaming water somehow spewed out of the closed section between the blue and silver screw tops (the silver bit has a strainer inside of it, to keep the drinker from swallowing loose tea) and lightly sprayed my other two friends Katie and Maddy. There were no serious burns, but still...
